Nigeria

The Flag of Nigeria  was designed in 1959 and first officially hoisted on October 1, 1960. The two unique sea-green bands represent the forests and abundant natural wealth of Nigeria while the white band represents peace.
The national flag is an adaptation of the winning entry in a competition held in 1959. . The designer of the national flag was a student, Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi. He hailed from Owu in Abeokuta, he saw an  advertisement in the national daily that entries were being accepted for the design of a new National Flag. Akinkunmi quickly prepared his entry and sent it to Lagos where it was eventually picked in 1958 as the best and the flag was used to celebrate an independent Nigeria on October 1, 1960. Kudos to Akinhunmi for representing his country

Great Igbo Leader Laid to Rest with Honors

Great Igbo Leader Laid To Rest With Honors

May his spirit rest in peace, and may his light continue to be a beacon above as it was below >>shine on brother shine on

There was a poem written about this great leader that I want to share with you that gives in essence who this man was and what his life meant to many:
Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu

Thou who was, is and shall ever be in mind
The sunrise of the East and sunset of the West
A moon to the North and a star to the South
The lion of Africa, a dove of Nigeria and Odumegwu of Igbo land

A historian by quality but an Army by profession
In life a warrior at death a hero
To Nigerians a traitor to humanity a blessing
At your sight the truth bow and justice sings

A saviour of the oppressed, eloquent orator of the dumb and foot step of the lame
At UN peacekeeping force in Congo you served,
The 5 Battalion of the Nigerian Army at Kano you defended
And at Aburi accord you stood,

Though an Easterner (Anambra)but was born in the North (Gwari/Nupe)
and schooled in the south(Lagos), oh great compatriot of London Oxford university
precious gold who opted for a poor Nigerian Army
Not for interest, favour, power but for service

Things worth reading you wrote,
and things worth writing you lived
Ikemba to situations and conditions
with typical candour and valour.

Generous, selfless, courageous and hardworking
Born a King, lived King and died a King.
Your death woke even the spirits
You died not at the war front, but at peace

Oh great pantheon of Igbo deities
Pray for us at this veil of ties called Nigeria
United in confusion but divided in objectives
That we might lean from you and amend our ways.

You fought the great battle
You have finished the race
Receive your meritorious crown of glory
From the glorious
Requiescat in pacem. Amen,

Out With The Old And In With The New

President Goodluck Johnathan is taking a bold move by conducting elections throughout Nigeria without security forces at polling booths. This is an unprecedented move and has never been tried before, I think if Nigerians truly want democracy this is a good step forward to renewing minds and spirits and a belief that there can be civility during elections. As stated by the Nigerian President " We are disciplined people; we know we have disciplined people", this is a good time to show it.

2015 elections to be conducted without security agents at polling units – Jonathan

ALABAR  -  PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has promised to put in place measures that would ensure that subsequent elections in the country are conducted without the police or security agencies at the polling units.
The President who stated this at the grand finale of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP campaign rally for the February 25 governorship elections in Cross River State at the U. J. Esuene Stadium, Calabar, Tuesday, said the party has been advocating one man one vote to instill sanity into the electoral process.
He said, “At the national level, starting from my general election in April last year, we have been advocating one man, one vote, one woman, one vote, one youth, one vote and we are succeeding. INEC is succeeding.
“The next step of our campaign is that we want to make sure we conduct elections in Nigeria without police. We want to conduct elections without security people carrying guns. We want a situation where Nigerians would go queue up and vote, the votes are counted and nobody is cheated, so that at the end of the elections there would be no all kinds of litigations with all kinds of stories.
“That is our next campaign and God willing before 2015, we would conduct election without security carrying guns to follow us. We are disciplined people; we know we have disciplined people. We know Nigerians are disciplined people. If all of us agree to do it we would do it.
“Cross River is one of such states we can use as a model. We can conduct election in this peaceful state without police,” he said.

http://www.thenationonlineng.net/2011/index.php/news-update/36395-cbn-donates-n100m-to-kano-blast-victims.html
Central Bank of  Nigeria governor, Sanusi Lamido  donates money to blast victims and their families of  Kano state.  as stated in the article the incident affected the country and the world at large, the impact cannot bring love one's back but I am sure the money can be used for children that has lost parents, and mental health counseling from the stress of the tragedy.  Many have called Mr. Sanusi Lamido a hypocrite for not helping all victims from terrorist attacks, but maybe this is a start towards a new agenda to heal Nigerian citizens by way of much needed medical attention from a circumstance that was not of their own making.

News Story:

Making History--Lagos Nigeria Partners with China to build a Light Rail System

 http://allafrica.com/stories/201201161252.html

Lagos and China are in the process of making history together, they are teaming up to build a light rail project that will employ somewhere near 8000 people, that is good news for Nigeria they are making strides in a positive manner regardless of some setbacks. This is indeed will have a revolutionary impact for the citizens of this country, they now will become more mobile and there will be less congestion on the roadways and with that less pollution, which means cleaner air to breathe.  Below is the article in regards to the project so you can see for yourself how "Africa Is On The Rise", which is long over due.

Nigeria: Lagos - China and the Light Rail Project

The Chinese are in Lagos and many other parts of Nigeria, involved in business, as well as in construction.
One striking aspect of their intervention in Lagos is the railways, which is currently witnessing a rebirth in the state.
Chinese contact with Africa is hardly a modern phenomenon, for this contact lies far back in historical time. Indeed Egyptians had reached China by the year 400AD.Yang Lihua writing in the work Fifty Years of Sino-Soviet Cooperation indicates 'Chinese, in the ancient times, formed links with Africa at about 130BC.
At the beginning of the year 400AD Egyptians reached China by land and sea. From the 7th to the 15th century, industries and commerce were booming and China was open to foreign trade and overseas exchanges' (p.57). However, this ancient trading relationship would seem to have undergone a revival of sorts in modern times.
A look at the Nigerian-Sino trading situation easily confirms this. In 2010 total Chinese trade in Nigeria, comprising imports, exports and investments amounted to$ 8bn. In 2011, this had risen to a refreshing $10bn, and there are clear signs that this figure will rise with the passing of the years, further cementing Sino-Nigerian relations. The railways sector, to speak of just one area of focus, is a promising aspect of the Chinese intervention in the country, and this is very obvious in Lagos state, as well as other parts of the country.
At its peak the Light Rail project in Lagos, Nigeria's economic capital, will employ some 8,000 persons, so says Governor Babatunde Fashola, who anticipates an upsurge in economic activities when the project is ready. There is palpable joy among Lagosians of all ages and classes on account of the Light Rail project, and the anticipated benefits of same.
From an economy animated by buses, taxis, trailers, and characterized by not a few pot-holed roads, as well as massive traffic congestion, a big change is now coming upon the Lagos environs, with the special focus on railways which the state has embraced.
It is hoped that this year the first 8 kilometers of the blue line light rail project would be completed. The blue line will cover some 27 Kilometres running from Okokomaiko to CMS in central Lagos. This lofty work is being done by a construction firm, Chinese Civil Engineering Company limited (CCECC), a company which has been in the country for 30 years. Altogether, there will be seven rail networks in the state. These are the red, blue, green, yellow, purple, brown and orange lines.
The light rail project is part of the states intermodal transport scheme which is aimed at using rail, water and land to create an efficient transport system for the people. The horizon of the state is bound to change when the trains come, and these will have a revolutionary impact on the entire transport system, and even the quality of life itself. The light Rail project also has significance for art and even tourism.
Recently, the GM National Theatre, Lagos told this reporter in an interview that the completed Light Rail would have a station just by the National Theatre and its destination would be Ebutte-Metta .This means more theatre loving persons would have a quick means of travelling down to and from the theatre.
On the whole the rail project would reduce the pressure of vehicular traffic on the roads,as well as spark off a range of economic activities, beyond the envisaged 27 kilometres of roads. The blue line would have 13 stations.
There is another side to the light rail project currently under construction. This is the story of the ordinary workers who do most of the hard labour that is going to produce a remarkable rail project, which will turn around the story of transport in Lagos State. One of the workers at the Apapa section of the project, who prefers not to disclose his identity, speaks on the mode of transport the workers experience, and says 'The staff bus is constructed like a Black Maria which is used to convey prisoners to jail .
I do understand that the workers are just labourers, but they are human and contribute to the growth of the nation. The only crime these workers have committed is that they are not formally learned, but they are skilled'. He adds that the Black Maria is constructed like a box, and says that it has little ventilation and is always hot.
He then speaks about the wages earned. According to him 'How can a full grown man with a family, receive less than 20,000 Naira in a month?' He adds that the salary is not fixed. 'It's calculated by an hourly rate depending on your status or position in the company.
Some casual workers receive 50 Naira hour. The mathematics is that for a day he receives 500 Naira, which is 50 Naira multiplied by ten hours. 'He ponders how a man can survive on this for a month. 'How can he pay for rent, feed and clothe his family? I have two old men at my site who earn less than 30,000 Naira a month. How they survive each month is still a miracle to me'. He also refers to another shocking disparity in terms of wages.
His words 'The Chinese man because he is an expatriate is paid in Dollars, but we do the work. They only show us what to do. So why on earth are we subjected to such psychological pain.' Another staff of the company tells Daily Trust that 'there is no welfare package for workers, and if someone falls ill, the company does not assist in any way. They only assist in a situation where a staff sustains an injury while working on site.
He also explains a number of problematic aspects of the work. 'His words 'The highest position a Nigerian can attain in the organisation is that of Personnel Manager in which all the site personnel Managers report back to the Chinese General Personnel Manager in the head office.'
He explains that none of the Site Personnel Managers is paid based on the qualifications he possesses. His words 'None of these site personnel Managers are paid based on their qualifications, whether these be Bsc or Msc degrees.
The fact is that Bsc holders are not different from unskilled Chinese workers on site. The site personnel manager is the highest a Nigerian can attain on the site, he added' .There is no provision of housing, medical, vehicle, and other benefits are not included in his conditions of service. He adds that Chinese are trooping into the country without appropriate immigration documents. His words 'The Chinese are trooping into the country without complete immigration documents, and jobs which ordinary Nigerians can handle, have been taken by the Chinese citizens in Nigeria. 'He speaks of a serious communication gap in the company, which has resulted in staff being sacked. His words 'It is a policy in every country of the world ,that one must learn the general language of communication, at least just for a little understanding of the language of your receiving country, before migration there. But the Chinese case is completely zero.'
In a recent interview with a Nigerian newspaper, Deng Boqing , the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria says of conditions persisting in Chinese construction companies in Nigeria 'We have always required the Chinese companies to treat their local employees as friends and brothers, and kept reminding them that only in that way could they continuously develop themselves in Nigeria.
The overwhelming majority of companies in Nigeria have so far done that quite well. They always attach great importance to the employment and management of local staff'. 'He adds quite significantly 'They have strictly observed relevant laws and legislations in giving equal and unbiased treatment to both Chinese and Nigerian employees, and actively safeguarding the rights and interests of local staff'.
A source close to the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria tells this reporter 'The monthly salary of Nigerian employees working in Chinese companies ranges from 20,000 Naira to 200,000 Naira, or even higher.
Among that, ordinary technical workers usually receive a salary of over 30,000 Naira, while senior technicians and management staff enjoy the highest salary of over 200,000 naira. Besides salary, Chinese companies in Nigeria also attach great importance to the provision of comfortable environment and good facilities for the local employees. For those who work for the project-contracting companies with tough working conditions, safety equipment like safety hats, labour protection shoes, etc. is fully guaranteed. Some of those companies even provide regular bus service, dining hall, Medicare center and other facilities. Equipment like laptop computers is provided to senior local employees.
Some Chinese companies organize regular training for Nigerian employees, which contributes many specialists to relevant local industries. Some local employees have even been selected and sent to China for visiting and further training.'
He adds hopefully "I believe that, with the development of Chinese and Nigerian economy and growth of Chinese companies in Nigeria, the welfare of local employees in those companies will definitely be further improved." The Chinese have come again, changing much of our cities and the horizon, but also coming along with work practices which sometimes overwhelm the labourers who work under them.

Dialogue Request By Nigerian President "GoodLuck Johnathan" with Islamist Militant Group

ABUJA, Nigeria, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has called for leaders of the Islamist militant group Boko Haram to make a list of demands to start a dialogue.
The president's remarks came nearly a week after the group bombed a police station in the northern city of Kano, killing 185 people, the BBC reported Friday.
Nigeria's Civil Rights Congress Shehu Sani said Jonathan should have initiated dialogue between the government and Boko Haram leaders at the beginning of his presidency.
"Boko Haram picked up arms when violence was used against them in 2009 and their leaders were killed in cold blood by security agencies," Sani said. "When [President] Goodluck Jonathan took up power it wasn't his problem -- all he had to do was to simply say: 'Here am I, a new person, and I have a different agenda and I am calling you to come and sit down and let's discuss this issue.'"
Sani said if a cease-fire agreement be reached, Boko Haram members are not likely to breach it.
"The command is usually given by their council and their spiritual head and for such an organisation that is structured that way, I believe that it is possible to also to sit down with them -- and once they agree to a cease-fire you will find it very difficult to see it being broken because they have a leadership structure," Sani said.

Some people think that  Nigerian President "GoodLuck Johnathan"  appears weak by trying to negotiate with Islamist extremist. However, it takes a strong will power and intellect to even consider a dialogue with the leaders of the Islamic Militant group "Boko Haram", seeing that hundreds of  innocent Nigerian citizens were harmed due to the ideology of a religious group that has taken violence as a means of redress due to not being allowed a voice in governmental policies that do not agree with their religious ideology. I see no weakness in the President at all, the true test will be for "Boko Haram" are they man enough to come out of hiding and try to become part of the solution or will they keep on with this unnecessary violence and alienate them selves from the mainstream of society and appear as cowards. May the force of good be with the President of Nigeria as he try to create a peaceful resolution for the citizens of Nigeria. Because surely nothing good can come out of violence but violence, there are many ways to resolve conflicts that do not involve harming innocent people.

Article: Two Nigerian projects make top global infrastructure list

I read this particular article in regards to the 5th Annual Global Infrastructure Leadership Forum, scheduled to be held in London, United Kingdom, between February 22 and 24, this year. The projects are expected to contribute to job creation and opportunity creation for the winner of that country's particular state or province. Projects span all infrastructure sectors, including Electricity generation, transmission and distribution; oil & gas, digital infrastructure, “new energy”, water/ waste-water, ports & logistics, urban mass transit, and airports. Each sector offers a series of cross-cutting – finance, equipment, technology, engineering & construction, public policy, services – opportunities for high-level executives.
the program would showcase countries with the most innovative and competitive infrastructure projects.

Mr. Daniel Omonze, who is also the Country's Coordinator of the 5th Annual Global Infrastructure Leadership in Nigeria, was visibly excited that his country's Mambila Hydroelectric Power project which was listed among the top 100 Global Infrastructure Projects.

This article shows that despite the economic and modernization setbacks over the years Nigeria is making strides to undergo massive infrastructure changes to become more self sufficient and creating jobs and opportunities that at one time was unforeseeable.  The 21st Century is proving to be a promising time for African Citizens. Just think if the infrastructure is safely set into motion how many people will invest in the country which will bring more revenue and more people migrating to invest and bring Africa back to its former glory in a new modernized version.   I have included the link below to the actual article I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. Positive stories can bring about positive results

Great Voodoo Festival

This is the month for the Benin Voodoo Festival,

Every year in the village of Glidji, 30 miles from Togo's capital city of Lome, members of the Guen tribe gather together for the Epe Ekpe festival -- part family reunion, part New Year's Eve, part religious worship. This is a time of togetherness of worship, revival, love, and pride of ethnicity and culture.

Many people hear the word voodoo and automatically become frightened. When in actuality there is nothing to fear, Vodun is an ancient religion practiced by some 80 million people in the West African nations of Benin, Togo and Ghana. With its countless deities, animal sacrifice and spirit possession, voodoo as it's known to the rest of the world is one of the most misunderstood religions on the globe. Therefore, let me give you a brief synopsis of Vodun as you take this journey into understanding I hope you become enlightened.

 History
Voodoo is a religion that was brought to the Western coasts by slaves from Africa.  Voodoo can be spelled several ways: vodun, vaudin, voudoun, vodou, and vaudoux. It is an ancient religion practiced by 80 million people worldwide and is growing in numbers.

The Beliefs
Voodoo belief recognizes one Supreme Being who created the universe, but who is too far away for a personal relationship with its worshippers. Therefore, the cult followers serve the loa or lesser deities to gain guidance for their lives. The loa are the spirits of ancestors, animals, natural forces, and the spirits of good and evil.

This is a beginning of a new year and as always as you begin a new year this is a time to give thanks to the ancestors and Benin goes all out and people from all over the world come out to celebrate. It is to early to post the 2012 video of the Great Festival so I am providing a link for you to explain the voodun history further I hope you find it interesting and enlightening

The Essence of Voodoo

http://www.africanholocaust.net/news_ah/vodoo.htm
I am also providing a youtube link to give you an example of dances and drumming that provide an insight into a yearly revival and that revival unbeknown to some this religion and revival has spread across America, Haiti, Brazil, and Cuba. I myself am amazed to see dancing and drumming of this nature in many Baptist churches throughout the United States this goes to show that a body may die but the spirit lives on.
